What is Counselling Kinesiology?

counselling_kinesiologyThe human body is an incredible piece of machinery and we have been designed to heal ourselves in many ways.  But with outside stresses, such as toxins, emotional stress, physical ailments, relationship issues, work pressures, and so on, we get overloaded and the body needs help. Our Counselling Kinesiologist (CKTM) will help facilitate this healing process.

What is Counselling Kinesiology?

Counselling Kinesiology or CKTM for short, employs a biofeedback tool called kinesiology, also known as muscle testing – to assist in identifying stress. The counselling component uses many well-respected and effective counselling techniques to assist in getting to the core of the emotions holding possible physical and emotional pain.

The kinesiology component helps to pinpoint where in the body these pains are being stored. The purpose of Counselling Kinesiology (CKTM) is to help people resolve past issues, gain insight into their current issues and implement action plans to make change their lives.

Counselling Kinesiology (CKTM) is broken into 3 parts

  • Stage 1 – Talk Therapy: a gentle, directive counselling process
  • Stage 2 – Experiential Stage: Emotional Stress Circuit – this is where the kinesiology comes in
  • Stage 3 – Integrative Stage: long term, effective exercises to bring about change

Each of these stages work together to become a highly effective tool for de-stressing and for long term behavioural changes.

Stage 1

The Talk Therapy Stage is just that, it is a time for the Counselling Kinesiologist to build a rapport with the client, by using targeted questions, providing a supportive and safe environment for a person to share their feelings and open up about the deep issues are that they are experiencing – that is, what it is that has brought them to see a practitioner.

During this session, clients are encouraged to identify goals and dreams, investigate their past histories and what they have attempted in an effort to solve these problems.  We also look at what has sabotaged these goals from being achieved. Let’s face it; if we are honest with ourselves we all do the ‘sabotage’ thing up to a certain point – Counselling Kinesiology (CKTM)  helps us to understand why we do these things and then learn how not to continue on these potentially destructive pathways.

Once the issues have been identified, these are brought together by a series of ‘feelings statements’.  We utilize these in the next stage.

Stage 2

This stage is the major focus of Counselling Kinesiology (CKTM) we use the ‘feeling statements’ and kinesiology to identify the underlying issues that maintain the current troubling feelings. We use techniques such as time-tacking, using muscle testing, and two emotional states charts – the CK™ “Developmental Directory™”, and the CK™ “Grief Gauge™” to help identify the stressful periods of the past – or how it has been viewed and how these have affected the present. Unfortunately, things that have happened in our lives, in the past, can more often than not, have an impact on how we view things, respond or react to things in our present day lives.  Finding the triggers, de-stressing them and re-learning, will help a person to have a more fulfilled and effective life.

During stage 2 our Counselling Kinesiologist utilizes gentle visualisation techniques to help people connect with the underlying issues – they need to ‘touch’ these issues at an emotional level, ‘if you can’t feel it, you can’t heal it’ type thing.  The Inner Child – you know, the child within us, the one that everyone now and then wants to break free and be a little restless, have a little fun, the one we tend to try and forget exists – well this is also an interactive technique that is used to de-stress and resolve the underlying feelings. In Counselling Kinesiology (CKTM) we strive for the ‘aha’ moment when the insight gained from recognising the current issue has an earlier emotional history; that is a pattern.  When this is de-stressed, it helps to resolve the earlier issues and can become a model for making changes in the present.  Now to help make these changes last and to take us past the ‘aha’ moment, we need to back these up with exercises, which brings me to stage 3.

Stage 3

In this stage our Counselling Kinesiologist wants to take the changes that have been made in stage 2 and help turn them into lasting practical behavioural changes. These changes need to align with a person’s own values & goals and of course they need to be implemented. These exercises cover a wide range, including exercises for role modelling, effective communication and assertiveness skills, clearing anxieties and phobias, cognitive disputing, energy medicine, mindfulness and relationships. Life enhancing exercises adapted from Coaching and Positive Psychology are also used.

To help integrate these exercises into everyday life, your Counselling Kinesiologist will demonstrate them; they are then practiced with the client and then the client will practice alone so that they can be implemented into real world situations.  The secret to these exercises is to overlearn them.

Change is a big deal and not always an easy thing to do, we make sure that these new skills are practiced in a safe environment before trying to use them with the people in our lives to ensure the highest success rate.

So why do all 3 stages, why not cut to the chase, do the kinesiology on its own and then give a pat on the back and send the client on their merry way?

It’s true, each stage could stand ‘on its own’ – there are many modalities that do just this.  Counselling Kinesiology is designed to do more than just looking to fix a problem; it is intended to   make a life-long change. The risk of leaving out stage 1 and going straight to stage 2 could mean that we have not developed that rapport with the client or created a safe enough place for them to truly let go and express their deepest feelings. Missing out on stage 2 and going straight to stage 3, could mean that the old ‘sabotage’ thing could rear its ugly head because we haven’t had that ‘aha’ moment and don’t understand why we do what we do because we haven’t reached the underlying issue. And as I said before, stage 3 brings it all together to help ensure life-long changes. Without this stage, these changes may not take hold and the person could end up right back where they started.
